True Friend

Ruth 1

I pray blessings on you as you read.

(v. 16-17) "But Ruth replied, 'Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me."

My Thoughts

Ruth was the daughter-in-law of Naomi. Naomi lost her husband, and then later her two sons. She told her daughters-in-law to leave her and go back to their mother's homes, but Ruth insisted on staying with her. Naomi had nothing left really, and Ruth knew that. She wanted to stay by Naomi and she did just that. Ruth was a true friend to Naomi.

There was nothing really left for Ruth either, but she was young and could still have another husband. Naomi was older and, as she said, too old to have children. The two of them went back to Naomi's people and her God, and Ruth ad already decided that Naomi's people and God would be her own as well. How amazing is that? That Ruth would so willingly accept a people and a God not her own. It is surely because of Naomi that Ruth was so willing of this.

The name 'Ruth' means friendship, and she definitely lived up to that. Being a true friend means to be accepting of someone, no matter what. It doesn't matter what color skin they have, what language they speak, what gender they are, what they like or what they believe. You accept the person for who they are. You do not, however, have to accept these things and make it yours as well. Ruth did that of her own accord and chose to follow Naomi's God, who is of course, our God.

We should follow Ruth's example of friendship. With all of our friends, we should be fully accepting of who they are, for who they are. We do not have to agree with everything by any means. You don't have to like the same color, activities or foods. You definitely do not have follow their actions and repeat certain words that they say, in fact, depending on what it is, you probably shouldn't at all.

Be a true friend to someone, whether it is someone new or someone you're already friends with. You can always become a better friend to your current friends, and add new people to your list of friends.
