Bible Reading #183 - Jesus was Tempted

Jesus was Tempted

Matthew 4

I pray blessings on you as you read.

(v. 1) "Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert to be tempted by the devil." (v. 10) "Jesus said to him, 'Go away, Satan! Scripture says, 'Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.' ' "

My Thoughts

A while ago, I made another post on temptation. You can read that post if you wish, it is about us being tempted. This post is about Jesus being tempted. That actually sounds a bit strange, doesn't it? For Jesus to be tempted? If you did read my previous post on temptation, I said that temptation is not a sin. Giving in to it can be.

Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights and he was hungry. So Satan tempted Him to turn stones to bread so He could eat. After forty days without food, you'd be very hungry. So if there was a possibility of having instant food, wouldn't you want it? I'm sure Jesus did too. Speaking from scripture, Jesus says that "A person cannot live on bread alone but on every word that God speaks.

Satan takes words from scripture to try and trick Jesus, and Jesus won't have any of it. The last thing Satan tries is to get Jesus to worship him and says that he'll give Jesus everything He sees if He does. Really, Satan? You thought that had a chance of working? Go home. Now of course, I don't want to just repeat everything the Bible says here, so I shortened. You should go read it so you have all the information.

Why is all this important to us anyway? Well, remember that Jesus was one of us. Human in every way. Jesus gave up His power completely when He came to Earth so He could be fully one of us. This means that anything Jesus did is possible for us to do. Jesus relied fully on His Father God for everything. So should we.

So, when we are tempted, remember what Jesus did. He looked to scripture, God's Word, for the answer. We should look to scripture as well. That means we have to read God's Word often and not just look at the words. Understand the words and what they mean. Don't take things out of context. Write down your thoughts on what you read. Read the Bible as if you were reading your textbook, studying for a test. The only difference is, you don't know when the test is, so you always need to know.

Jesus looked to scripture the first time Satan tempted Him. The second time, Satan took scripture out of context and Jesus did not. Thirdly, Jesus knows that God is the only one who is to be worshiped. No matter what you can gain otherwise, you will lose it all in the end. And in Jesus' case, everything already belonged to Jesus anyway.

When we are tempted, follow Jesus' example:

1. Look to God's Word
2. Don't take it out of context
3. Worship God alone

Remember these three things to resist temptation.
