Bible Reading #181 - Beauty for God

Beauty for God

2 Chronicles 4

I pray blessings on you as you read.

(v. 19-20) "Solomon made all the furnishings for God's temple: the gold altar, the gold tables on which the bread of the presence was placed, lamp stands and lamps of pure gold (to burn as directed in front of the inner room),"

My Thoughts

Go read about the building of God's temple by Solomon. You'll see that a massive amount of work was put into it. A lot of that work was put into making it beautiful, not just into building it. Why do you think Solomon would put so much time and effort into making the temple and its furnishings so pretty? It's not really necessary, is it?

The world has so much beauty in it. When God created the world and everything else, He didn't just throw stuff together and say it was good enough. He spent six days creating and He saw that it was good. If you were going to create something, why would you want it to just be thrown together and look ugly? As long as it works, right? Wouldn't you want to like looking at it?

Everyone has different standards of beauty. Obviously, more than likely, a child's drawing is not going to be in a museum of drawings by famous artists. Does that mean that the child's drawing is ugly? No, of course not! Some people might think so, but to the parents, it's absolutely beautiful! Beauty has many standards and its more how you, yourself perceive it, rather than anyone else.

I think what's universal is how much effort you put into something. Not even the time. You don't have to spend a long time making something, you just have to put a lot of effort into it. That's what Solomon did with God's temple. It was built as a dwelling place for God. You want your own home to look nice, right? Why shouldn't God's home look nice too?

Making things pretty may not really be necessary for some things, but it has its place. When you're dancing, if your moves are choppy, it looks bad and feels bad. When doing parkour, if it looks pretty, it's usually more efficient. With martial arts, it usually means there more power and again, efficiency. With music, it hurts the ears otherwise. With art, why would you look at it? For practical things like machines and tools, why would you want to use something that looks ridiculous?

Make whatever you do beautiful, just remember that looks aren't everything when it comes to beauty. A person can look really pretty, but have an ugly attitude. A machine can look very shiny and fancy, but break every time it's used. If you're going to create something or do something, then make it beautiful because God made you beautiful.
