Bible Reading #179 - A Good Wife

A Good Wife

Proverbs 31

I pray blessings on you as you read.

(v. 10-12) " 'Who can find a wife with a strong character? She is worth far more than jewels. Her husband trusts her with all his heart." (v. 30) " 'Charm is deceptive and beauty evaporates, but a woman who has the fear of the LORD should be praised."

My Thoughts

Okay, yeah, the title sounds a little sexist, no? Please keep reading, these are all good things, with no sexism, that also apply to husbands, though it favors wives. Proverbs 31 mentions a large amount of characteristics of a good wife. Who says a wife is supposed to be a cook or a maid? She is a lot more than that!

One characteristic of a good wife is that she provides for her family. At the time this chapter of the Bible was written, that would've meant that the woman of a household would work diligently. She would cook, she would farm and make clothing and other items and she would sell them and she would earn money for the things she did.

A woman would be strong for her family, wise, loving and her husband would praise her. You know how in our society, the husband is supposed to be the breadwinner? That means he's supposed to work and provide for his family. Well, the Bible says that a good wife works just as much as her husband. She is not useless or idle by any means!

Now there should be no gender bias here, at all. A good wife is praiseworthy because she is not useless or idle or lazy. A Good husband would be just as praiseworthy because of the same reasons. Just as a wife should not be lazy or idle, neither should the husband be.

Society has gone through many changes. These verses were written before Jesus walked this Earth as one of us, and women were seen as equal, at least in some ways. For such a long time, women were thought of to be less than men and had very few rights. It was even discouraged for a woman to read. Now, women have positions of authority. Society has made a lot of progress.

The same things in these verses I believe still apply today, or at least they should. Whoever you are, if you are married, remember to be kind and loving to your spouse. Be strong for your family. Have equality between you and your spouse. God has brought you together to be one. Don't forget that.

Prayer Time

Now you talk to God about what you read, and you can even read this chapter of the Bible for yourself before you do.
