Bible Reading #164 - Follow the Example

Follow the Example

Job 29

I pray blessings on you as you read.

(v. 2-3) " 'If only my life could be like it used to be, in the days when God watched over me, when he made his lamp shine on my head, when I walked through the dark in his light."

My Thoughts

Job was a very good person. We know this for sure because it says earlier in Job that God is pleased with Job and that he is His servant. According to Job, he was almost like a celebrity! Princes would be silent and people could hardly believe it when he smiled at them. I know that Job did do a lot of good and his heart was centered on God.

People treated Job this way because of all the things he did. He helped people whenever he could, in any way he could. He was eyes to the blind, feet to the lame, and a father to the needy. Should we not follow Job's example?

Ultimately, we should follow Jesus' example. Part of the reason Jesus came to Earth as a human was so that we could have a fellow human being to follow the example of. Jesus and Job are not the same person and Jesus didn't do everything that Job did, nor did Job do everything Jesus did.

There are so many people in this world that have a heart centered on God. Jesus may not be around with us in the same way when He walked on Earth, but His heart in these people. They are our examples to follow because they emanate the heart if Jesus. Everyone has their heroes or 'idols' and we often try to be as much like them as we can. You can have more than one. Jesus is definitely at the top for me.

None of us are ever going to be perfect like Jesus was, but we can certainly have Jesus in us. We can certainly be Jesus to someone. Follow the example of Jesus and of Job and of others who do good and whose hearts are centered on God. You may not be treated like them, you may not become like them, but your heart will be centered on God. And to be Jesus to someone would be the most amazing thing ever!
