Bible Reading #220 - Shhh! Don't Tell!

Shhh! Don't Tell!

Genesis 37

Every day I feel is a blessing from God. And I consider it a new beginning. Yeah, everything is Beautiful. - Prince
I pray blessings on you as you read.

(v. 4-5) "Joseph's brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them. They hated Joseph and couldn't speak to him on friendly terms. Joseph had a dream and when he told his brothers, they hated him even more." (v. 20) "Let's kill him, throw him into one of the cisterns, and say that a wild animal has eaten him. Then we'll see what happens to his dreams.' "

My Thoughts

Joseph had dreams that all of his brothers and his family would bow down to him. The fist dream, sheaves of wheat were the metaphor for this and in the second dream, it was the sun, moon and 11 stars. If you had dreams like that, where your family was bowing down to you, would you want to tell your family? What if they thought it might actually be true? Should Joseph have kept silent about these dreams?

With his brothers already hating him to the point they couldn't say a nice word to him, Joseph told them about his dreams. Now they hated him all the more and wanted to kill him! All except Reuben. Reuben wanted to save Joseph from being killed. So he persuaded them to put him into the cistern without killing him. Then they chose to sell him to a passing caravan.

In the end, Joseph's dreams still came true. But it took a lot of time and some other hard things. We'll be getting to those things in the next few passages. My big question right now is this: If Joseph hadn't said anything to his brothers about his dreams, would they still have come true? Now of course the answer is yes, because nothing can stop God's plan. How would things have been different?

If Joseph had not told his brothers or his family about his dreams, God's plan still would have come true, but would his brothers have hated him? Would he have been to Egypt as a slave or as a hired worker maybe? We don't really know. So what do we get out of all this for ourselves?

There are some things that you don't need to or maybe shouldn't tell certain people. It also depends on the manner in which you tell them. If you are boasting or arrogant or egotistical, don't expect it to be met with a good attitude. Basically, just don't go around boasting about things or telling people things as if nothing and no one else matters. I don't believe Joseph did this, but I'm sure he knew his brothers hated him already.
