Esau's Descendants

Genesis 36

I pray blessings on you as you read.

(v. 6-7) "Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, all the members of his household, his possessions, all his cattle and everything he had accumulated in Canaan and went to another land away from his brother Jacob. He did this because they had too many possessions to live together. There wasn't enough pastureland for all of their livestock." (v. 9) "This is the account of Esau and his descendants. He was the father of the people of Edom in the mountains of Seir."

My Thoughts

Israel, who was previously called Jacob, and his brother Esau were literally just reunited and now they are separating themselves again. My goodness! At least this time, it isn't for a bad reason! This time, they were separating simply because they both had too many possessions to live together. Their animals would not have enough pastureland to live off of.

Even though Israel and Esau are now apart from each other, I bet you they probably still visited each other often. The Bible may not mention this, but I highly doubt that they would just leave and never speak to or visit with each other ever again. That would be ridiculous. I imagine that they regularly met and enjoyed each other's company, talking about what's new and things that happened, maybe playing, bringing the kids, having meals and much more!

We already know that Jacob for sure became a great nation of his own, the Israelites. Esau had descendants as well. He may not have become as big a nation as Israel, and I don't even know he has any descendants still around today, but the Edomites were his descendants. Edomites are mentioned a few times in the Bible, and they come into play later on. Right now, we haven't even finished Jacob's story!

Israel's descendants were very important in the grand scheme of things because through him, Jesus came. Even so, Esau's descendants were no less important than that of Israel. They still had a part to play and they were still important to God.
