What You Don't Know Can't Hurt You?

1 Samuel 21

I pray blessings on you as you read.

(v. 7) "That same day one of Saul's servants who was obligated to stay in the LORD's presence was there. His name was Doeg. A foreman or Saul's shepherds, he was from Edom." (v. 10) "That day Davis left. He was still fleeing from Saul when he came to King Achish of Gath." (v. 12) "When David realized what they had said, he was terrified of King Achish of Gath."

My Thoughts

When David was running from Saul, he went to Ahimelech, the priest at Nob. David lied to Ahimelech and did not tell him why he was really there. Unfortunately for them, Doeg, who was a servant of Saul's, was there and saw David. In 1 Samuel 22 Saul had Ahimelech and his family killed for not reporting David to him.

Have you ever heard that saying 'what so-and-so don't know can't hurt him/her?' Well, that's kinda how David played this, thinking that it would be totally fine not to tell Ahimelech. It ended up being that what he didn't know actually killed him.

Maybe if David had told Ahimelech the truth about what was happening, or told him period, Ahimelech and his family may have been able to escape or hide. That saying is not true. Think about it. If you don't know about bacteria in your food, are you safe? No! You're still going to be affected by the bacteria, whether you know about it or not! Though if you knew, you more than likely won't eat it, thereby avoiding the consequences.

This is one reason why lying is such a bad thing. When we lie, we cause a lot of harm. Firstly to God because lies are not of God. Second to ourselves, at the very least spiritually, but it can cause problems later on as well. Thirdly to whoever we lie to. Fourthly if we lie about someone. Can you see why Satan is called the father or lies?

Not telling someone is something totally different. Not giving certain info is not necessarily a bad thing. It definitely can be, but God doesn't require that we tell everything little detail to every single person. There are some instances where you should not hide certain information. Other times, it really doesn't matter. That's something that is honestly common sense for the mos part and the rest, you have to use your wisdom.

The Bible a Mirror

1 Samuel 14

I pray blessings on you as you read.

(v. 38-39) "So Saul ordered all the leaders of the troops, 'Come here! Find out what sin was committed today. I solemnly swear, as the LORD and savior of Israel lives, even if it is my son Johnathan who did it, he must die.' But not one of the soldiers replied." (v. 44) "Saul said, 'May God do worse things to me than are in this curse if you do not die, Johnathan!' "

My Thoughts

Saul took an oath and made all his troops take an oath that no one would eat anything until he got revenge on the Philistines. Johnathan unknowingly broke that oath by tasting some honey that was on the end of his staff. In 1 Samuel 13, Saul knowingly disobeyed God, and here in 1 Samuel 14, Johnathan unknowingly broke an oath.

When Saul knowingly and willingly disobeyed God, he did not believe that he should be punished, at least not much or harshly. However, when Saul's own son, Johnathan unknowingly broke an oath, Saul was prepared, and willing, to kill him! How sad is that? Does that even make sense?

So Saul committed sin against God, knowing he did, and he should get off lightly, but his son sinned, unknowingly, and he should die. makes complete sense right? Sometimes people hold themselves to a higher standard than others, and it is really unfortunate. Not a single one of us is greater than another on this entire planet we call Earth. Only God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are worthy of that.

Instead of using the Bible and our faith and the righteous that we have in Christ, and yes, those who are in Christ are righteous because of Him, to find fault in others and unrighteousness in others, we should use it to find the flaws that are still in ourselves and then better ourselves from it. Just like when you look in the mirror to find those stray hairs to either pluck or shave, or if there's something in your teeth, or to fix your hair because it looks bad. Use the Bible as a mirror to see yourself better and find those flaws so that you can remedy them.

I am no better than anyone else. Sure, I may be 'better' at a particular game or activity skill wise due to lots of practice, but does that make me better than that person, as a person? Absolutely not! No matter how good I am at something or smarter or stronger or wealthy or anything else than anyone else, I am not in any way better than them as a person or in God's eyes.

We are all equal and loved equally to God and by God. We all have imperfections because none of us are perfect, so who we are and what we are in God we should use to our own advantage to better ourselves, in ourselves, for God so that we can we can be ever closer to Him.

Know God's Voice

1 Samuel 3

I pray blessings on you as you read.

(v. 9-10) "So Eli told Samuel, 'Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.' ' So Samuel went lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, 'Samuel! Samuel!' Then Samuel said, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.' "

My Thoughts

Samuel did not know God's voice yet at the time Samuel 3 takes place. So when God was calling Samuel this night, Samuel did not realize it and thought that it was Eli calling him instead, who, incidentally, was getting old and would probably be a normal thing for someone that age to be calling out for someone in the night.

This happened three separate times where God had called Samuel, Samuel ran to Eli, and Eli said that he didn't call him and told Samuel to go back to bed. The third time, Eli realized that it was God calling Samuel and told him to answer God the next time God called him. So Samuel did exactly that and God told him what He needed to tell him.

Sometimes God calls us as well and we either ignore it, don't realize it, or we don't recognize God's voice, as Samuel. So how do we get get to know God's voice? We get to know the voice of God by reading His word and talking to Him. It's only logical that when you're talking to someone, and the more you do, you get to know their voice better and better. So it is with God.

We need to come to know God's voice so that when we hear Him, we don't give second thought because we know that it is Him. There have been many times when I am not sure if I got something from God or not and I have to think about it for a minute. Sometimes I am just totally unsure and I pray about it and ask God to make it clear to me whether it was actually Him or not. If it was, it usually ends up staying in my mind for a bit and if it wasn't, God takes it away.

Get to know God more personally. Get to know His voice by reading His word often. My blog here is really just me sharing my thoughts on what I personally read. I cannot say that I am totally correct in everything that I say here because I am only sharing with you guys what I got from reading a particular passage in the Bible. I encourage you guys to read on your own and see what God tells you.

Making Good Choices

1 Samuel 2

I pray blessings on you as you read.

(v. 12) "Eli's sons were wicked men; they had no regard for the Lord." (v. 17) "This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord's sight, for they were treating the Lord's offering with contempt."

My Thoughts

Eli's sons had made some very bad choices. The Bible says that they were treating the Lord's offering with contempt. What they were doing was taking choice parts of the offerings that people made, before the fat was burned up, and fattening themselves on it. That was not what was supposed to have been done. They were only supposed to take a random portion, after the fat was burned.

Eli chose to favor his sons in the situation and not do as much as he could've. Eli only rebuked them, but he did nothing more when they did not listen to Him. Because of this, God took away the blessing that He gave to Eli, that God had chosen him to be His priest. He said that Eli's sons would die on the same day and that another would be raised up to be the priest.

Always do according to what is in God's heart so that your life will be built on Him and you live in Him. We all make many choices each day. Some are just small things, but are not insignificant. Some choices are recurring, when you continue to do the same thing or make the same choice often. Just be careful of the choices that you make.

We should always make wise choices and not make them hastily. I know that there are situations where you don't have a lot of time to make a choice. If we start making wise choices when we do have time to think about them, then when those split second decisions come, we will better be able to make the wiser choice faster. It's a skill like anything else, and it takes practice.

If you are ever unsure of a particular choice, talk to God about it. God knows best and He will help you to make the wisest choice. What Eli's sons did was not a split second decision. That was a conscious choice that they made to disobey God and to do what they knew was wrong. They chose wrong, knowingly and willingly. Don't be like them. Ask God for wisdom so that you can make the wisest choices that will lead you where God wants you to be.
